Science Summit for the UN SDGs on 10-27 September 2024

10th edition of the Science Summit at 79th United Nations General Assembly (SSUNGA79) will be held from the 10th to the 27th of September 2024 in New York City.

The main theme of the summit is the contribution of science in attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The objective is to enable science collaborations to demonstrate how science supports the attainment of the UN SDGs and Agenda 2030.

Earlier, the deadline to submit session proposal expired on 01 May 2024.

The summit will bring together thought leaders, scientists, technologists, innovators, policymakers, decision-makers, regulators, financiers, philanthropists, journalists and editors, and community leaders to increase collaborations across a broad spectrum of themes including ICT, health, nutrition, agriculture, astronomy, the environment, climate, geodesy and space, amongst others. It is a global event involving various stakeholders to discuss how science can contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Summit will examine what enabling policy, regulatory and financial environments are needed to implement and sustain the science mechanisms required to support genuinely global scientific collaborations across continents, nations and themes. Scientific discovery through the analysis of massive data sets is at hand. This data-enabled approach to science, research and development will be necessary if the SDGs are to be achieved.

The 10th Science Summit coincides with the “UN Summit of the Future” which will take place during UNGA79 on 16-17 September 2024. The Science Summit meetings will prepare input for the Summit of the Future, focusing on post-SDG era. As the target date for the SDGs approaches, the Science Summit plays a crucial role in evaluating progress, identifying gaps, and exploring innovative solutions to ensure sustained advancement beyond 2030. Thus, Science Summit also positions science at the heart of the “Summit of the Future” process, framing discussions on how science will drive the post-SDG agenda.

This summit will build on the successes of Science Summit at UNGA78, which brought together over 1800 speakers from all continents in more than 400 sessions.

The Science Summit at UN General Assembly session has is origins in the Global Science Summit hosted by the European Parliament in 2013. It was transferred in 2015 to UN General Assembly meetings to bring science to the centre of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Science Summits bridge the gap between science and policy, ensuring that scientific insights and advancements inform the creation and implementation of effective, sustainable, and inclusive global policies. Through dynamic discussions and networking opportunities, the Summit facilitates the exchange of ideas and the development of actionable strategies to address global challenges, thereby driving progress toward achieving the SDGs.
